According to estimates, this corresponds to around 32 percent of all food waste and causes economic damage amounting to 230 billion US dollars. The main causes in the processing and packaging phase are the destruction of “inferior” products due to quality standards and product specifications, offcuts and by-products due to standardized processing and inadequate processing facilities and equipment.
