Press release Aluminium Germany: Industry cautiously optimistic for 2024
Deliveries and demand trends
In 2023, a total of 796 million aluminum tubes and 575 million aluminum aerosol cans were delivered to Germany. Compared to 2022, this corresponds to an increase of 4% for aluminum tubes and a slight increase of 0.5% for aerosol cans. Manufacturers of aluminum tubes and aerosol cans reported good delivery volumes in the first half of 2023, followed by a slight decline in the second half of the year.
According to Clemens Behrenbruch, Chairman of the Tubes, Cans and Extrusions Association of Aluminium Germany (AD), “the strong demand for aluminum tubes, especially from the pharmaceutical sector, underlines the crucial role of our products in meeting essential packaging requirements. The industry’s performance in 2023 reflects our resilience and adaptability in dealing with challenging market conditions.”
Industry challenges
Despite an easing of the situation, energy prices remain high. There is uncertainty about availability in the coming years. Regulatory requirements and sustainability requirements in the supply chain also present companies with major bureaucratic challenges.
The shortage of skilled workers remains one of the most acute challenges facing the industry. New employees need a lot of time to familiarize themselves with the special requirements of the tube and aerosol can industry, and it is still very difficult to find suitable applicants. A higher sickness rate is also exacerbating the situation.
In particular, it is up to politicians to create an economic policy framework that offers companies planning security. The industry emphasizes the importance of taking proactive policy measures to ensure competitiveness.
Outlook for 2024
While the industry remains cautiously optimistic for 2024, uncertainties regarding energy prices, the shortage of skilled workers and regulatory challenges require proactive management. “Despite challenging conditions, we are determined to meet innovation and sustainability requirements as well as the changing needs of consumers in the best possible way,” summarizes Behrenbruch.
