We would like to inform you that the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO) will adopt a health-related regulation of the European Union (EU) on bisphenol A (BPA) and other bisphenols in consumer goods (Regulation (EU) 2024/3190). This adoption will take the form of an amendment to the Annex of the Commodities Ordinance (SR 817.023.21).
The EU regulation, which came into force on January 20, 2025, bans the use and trade of BPA, its salts and other hazardous bisphenols and their derivatives in materials that come into contact with food. This regulation was introduced following a report by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in 2023, which concluded that current BPA exposure levels pose a risk to consumers of all ages.
The Swiss regulation covers the manufacture of the following categories of food contact materials: plastics, printing inks, paints and coatings.
As this regulation serves to protect the health of consumers, the same level of protection as in the EU should apply in Switzerland as soon as possible.
This amendment to the appendix is currently in consultation with the authorities. It is a revision without consultation. The entry into force of these new regulations is planned for July 1, 2025. The transitional periods correspond to those of the EU.
