  • US tariffs affect a large part of the Swiss export industry
SVI 9. April 2025 0 Comments

The most important facts in brief:

  • economiesuisse has conducted a survey among companies and industry associations on the impact of the new US tariffs. Around half of the companies surveyed are negatively affected by the US tariffs.
  • The main reasons cited are a potential decline in demand in the USA, followed by a general economic downturn and a competitive advantage for competitors from countries with lower tariffs.
  • Politicians are now called upon to do their homework at home.

The USA announced new tariffs last week. Since April 5, a basic tariff of 10 percent has applied to all imports into the USA. In addition, country-specific import duties will be levied from today (April 9). Swiss exports to the USA will now be subject to an excessively high tariff rate of 31%. The announced US tariffs will hit the Swiss export industry hard. They are creating considerable uncertainty and worsening the competitiveness of Swiss companies. This comes at a time when the export outlook in other important sales markets is already gloomy.

economiesuisse conducted a survey to take the pulse of companies and industry associations shortly after the US tariff announcements. The survey shows: Uncertainty is currently high. Around half of the industry associations and companies surveyed are very negatively affected by the US tariffs.
