Bülach / Pöchlarn, June 12, 2025 – The Vetropack Group, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of glass packaging, plans to significantly increase its capacity to produce lightweight glass bottles made from thermally tempered glass in Austria from the second quarter of 2026. Thermally tempered lightweight glass bottles are produced using a process developed by Vetropack and are increasingly being used as a particularly sustainable reusable solution.
“The Board of Directors has approved the plan to significantly increase the production capacity of thermally tempered lightweight glass bottles in Austria. This means that the financial resources to build an industrial plant are now available,” explains Guido Stebner, Chief Technical Officer at Vetropack. Over several years, the company has developed an innovative process in Pöchlarn that makes the glass bottles extremely resistant through thermal hardening – with a lower weight. The thermally tempered lightweight glass bottle is up to 30 percent lighter than a traditional reusable bottle and offers optimized performance. This makes the bottle ideal as a returnable container – and impresses in terms of sustainability, stability and simpler logistics. At the beginning of last year, Vetropack Group, together with Brau Union Österreich, presented the innovative 0.33-liter returnable bottle as a standard solutionfor the entire Austrian brewing industry.
